Intro

During the original construction of the telescope there were:

4 cables from each tower to the closest corner of the platform
5 cables from each tower to the anchor behind the tower.
cable total:

4*3=12 platform cables
5*3=15 backstay cables
27 cables total (until 1992)

Auxiliary cables were added to the telescope during the gregorian upgrade (1992-1996). twelve cables in all were added:

6 cables from towers to platform:

2 cables from each tower to the platform (connect 2/3 of the way down each side of the triangle)
3 1/4" cables
22.18 lbs/foot density

6 cables from anchors to towers;

2 cables from each anchor to the top of the tower.
3 5/8 " cables
27.6 lbs/ft density

On 10aug20 auxmain4North came out of its socket at the t4 tower.

This cable had showed a slippage of up to 1 3/8" slippage as recently at 2018.

Other auxcables also show a slippage out of their sockets

Picture were taken of the cables were they enter the socket. Some of these have tape measures attached to check for slippage.

200813: saw 2 popped strands on tower4 platform Main cable1 (south)
200817: popped strand on t12 platform main cable 1 (east) at platform side.

don't have any earlier photos to tell if this was new or not.

200827: 2 popped strands on T8 platform main cable1 (at platform side).

this is the spliced cable that needs to be replaced
We don't have any pictures prior to this to tell if this is new or has been there awhile.
after talking with maintenance, these two strands have been popped for many years.

200916: found 1 popped strands on tower 4 Platform Main cable4 (north)

was not present on 200914

201015: a new popped strand shows up on T4Main3. was not present on 201014.
201016: found a popped strand on T4PMain1(south main).

Was not present on 201015.
It was seen on 200813.. so it is not a new popped strand.

By ring the wire count is: ring 1 (outer) 48 wires ring 2 42 wires ring 3 36 wires ring 4 30 wires ring 5 24 wires ring 6 18 wires ring 7 12 wires Between ring 7 and ring 8 are 6 smaller wires (<.5diam) that look like they are filling a space gap. ring 8 6 wires ring 9 center 1 wire The cable diameter is 3.25 inches. The cable radius is spanned by 8.5 wire diameters WireDiameter: 3.25/2/8.5 = .191" or 4.86 mm Need to check which diameter cable this is.
