Monitor the distomat dropouts by month

   The laser ranging distomats measure the position of the platform every two minutes. There are 6 distomats used to measure the position and orientation. The distomats are numbered  1 through 6 moving clockwise looking down from above the dish. They are space +/- 35 degrees from the towers. Distomat 1 is at the east side of T12 . They continue  clockwise with the last (distomat 6) which is on the west side of T12.  For a complete measurement, all 6 distomats must be functioning. Rain, fog , pointing error, etc... can cause one or more distomats to not complete the measurement.

    The plots on this page show when the various distomats have failed to complete a measurement. These plots should be monitored to make sure that a distomat is not failing. This could occur because the distomat itself has trouble, the window for the distomat is becoming opaque, the heater in the distomat is failing (causing humidity inside the cover to accumulate on the window), the alignment of the distomat is not optimal, or  there are problems with communications.

    Each table contains three columns. Each column has a different set of plots. The format of the plots is described below:
 
 

Col 1:  distomat failure by hour and day.

    For these plots the horizontal axis is the hour of day while the vertical axis is the day of month. The different distomats are coded by color. If a measurement does not complete then a * will be placed at that time and day for the distomat that failed. The *'s for each distomat  are offset by .15 from the adjacent ones so the * do not hide one another. A dashed line is drawn on the last day processed (from midnight up to the time the plot was made).
     If no data is recorded during a two minute interval, a light blue cross is written on the plot. This can occur if the pc is turned off for maintenance, or the file transfer between the pc and the sun server hangs up. At the beginning of each month, you may see a few "noreading" *. These should probably be ignored. The algorithm looks for all filenames with that requested month. The first few minutes of the first day of the month may be in the file of the last day of the previous month.
     Each plot covers an entire month except the current month (which is updated at 4am each morning).

Col 2,Col3:  failures by az,za and az,hour of day.

     These plots have selected all of the measurements when the carriage house was at stow position. They also require at least 1 bad distomat reading during a measurement. col2 selects 1 to 6 bad distomats bad while col3 selects 1 to 3 bad distomats.  Col2 will include heavy rain where all distomats have failed. Col3 requires at least 3 distomats functioning so it will exclude measurement of heavy rain. This lets you see which distomats function better overall, and which distomats may be affected by poor alignment and tilting of the platform.
    There  3 plots on a page. For each plot 2 distomats (that point at a common corner of the platform) are grouped together in each plot (color is used to distinguish the two):


     There are two pages for each month. The first page plots failures versus az,za so you can see if there is any weight imbalances. The 2nd page plots failures versus hour of day and azimuth. This will show if there is any day/night tendencies.
At the end of each year is a summary plot showing the number of total failures by month (by distomat) and the fractional number of failures by month (by distomat).

Some things to keep in mind:

  1. During the day the telescope is often left at az=270, za=10 for maintenance. It does not go to high za very often and the platform is not normally tilted.
  2. During noon the sun can pass close to a distomat (depending on the time of day). looking at the failures by hour of day this does not seem to happen very often.
  3. Some months are rainier than others. This causes distomat failures. You would expect all of the distomats to fail together, but that does not seem to happen all of the time.
