  Intro

    isee3 is the old ICE satellite that used AO as the down link back in the 80's when it flew by the comet giacobini-zinner.
It is now coming back toward earth and it is   transmitting two tones.

The setup:

sband wide (dual linears, Tsys about 35K) was used  to look at the isee3 tones.

Measured positions:  (top)

  The sband wide receiver (2.2 arcminute beam) was used to track the isee3 satellite. The 2217.5 and 2270.5 transponder signals were used to optimize the pointing position.

 To get around copying errors, i've placed the  positions in a file (positions.txt)

What exactly is being measured....

    The 2d gaussfits are using the telescope pointing model to measure the position of the telescope. The current model was made in 2012 (more info). It was rechecked in march14 (more info) after the cable repair.

The measured ra,dec postions were fit  to a 2nd order polynomial to check for outliers (.ps) (.pdf)

    There were 3 100 second data sets for each block. For each block, the voltages were doppler corrected and the transformed to get the spectra.

    I took the 27may14 ra,dec positions from the ephemeris file and used them to see how fast the ra,dec (current) is changing during a pass.

    This will affect  any pointing patterns we do on the telescope because:

09jun14 - satellite responds to coherent mode request

    On 09jun14 run number 9 (see 09jun14 scans)   a coherent mode cmd was sent to transponder A   I need to check what frequencies were sent. The recorded receive data showed that the satellite responded to the request.

    The first image is a low time resolution, narrow freq resolution dynamic spectra of the receive data
    The 2nd image is a high time resolution, wide freq span during the carrier slew
    The third image shows the same information with the frequency axis centered on the original carrier frequency (the units are switched to Khz).


    Average spectra show the strength of the carrier and sidebands (.ps) (.pdf)

    On 15jun14 19:53:21 utc (approximate) the command sequence was sent to Transponder A
    The received data showed that the satellite responded to the command. This is similar to what occurred 09jun14.

  The first image is a low time resolution, narrow freq resolution dynamic spectra of the receive data from transponder A.
    The 2nd image is a high time resolution, wide freq span during the carrier slew
    The third image shows the same information with the frequency axis centered on the original carrier frequency (the units are switched to Khz).

    The fourth image uses a db scale to get a clearer look at the carrier frequency
    The fifth image extends the time after the comands.

    I think that the coherent mode jump will let us separate the satellite oscillator error from the ephemeris error.
