Appendix A: Scattering Analysis Formulation
Paths of the incident light and light scattered toward the observer for a
single particle in an optically thin nebula. The scattering angle
thetascat measures the amount by which the light the observer
sees has been deflected from its incident path. For mathematical purposes, a
parcel of nebulosity is assumed to be small enough that
thetascat is essentially the same for every particle; thus
the total light scattered by the parcel in a given direction can be represented
as a simple summation of N identical scattering events.
