## Appendix A: Scattering Analysis Formulation

Paths of the incident light and light scattered toward the observer for a
single particle in an optically thin nebula. The scattering angle
*theta*_{scat} measures the amount by which the light the observer
sees has been deflected from its incident path. For mathematical purposes, a
parcel of nebulosity is assumed to be small enough that
*theta*_{scat} is essentially the same for every particle; thus
the total light scattered by the parcel in a given direction can be represented
as a simple summation of *N* identical scattering events.
