Instructions for continuum observing at the Arecibo 305m Console

• Login as “dtusr”, pwd = xxxx (pasted at the bottom of the console screen), wait

• At the observer2% prompt, type in gui

• Enter name PPK, project number a1731, and observe mode u (e.g. “line”)

• Enter Rx (e.g. u 430), then wait - takes a while

• Now, 2 beige screens will pop up

• Select a Catalog, then Visible Sources on the r.h. screen

• Click yes to really point the telescope?

• Then Load Setup on the l.h. screen i.e. the scan procedures

• In “First strip” button, enter the scan to start with (i.e. one after previous session’s last scan)

• Click on the Observe! button

• To move to a new field center (same scan coordinate), click on

visible sources again.

• At the end of the session: if map is uncompleted then

Press interrupt button (next to observing on l.h. screen).

• move data (which is next to interrupt )

• write down in logbook where the data was moved to: e.g.

/share/olcor/corefile.10jun03.a1731.1 for my first day

• exit normally (button at lower left of r.h. screen)

• close down anything that’s running (e.g. IDL programs). ^C, then exit, exit in each window.

• Exit openwindows
