Coastal Surveillance Radars -- A Radioastronomer's Perspective
I will give a short colloquium on coastal surveillance radars such as those used by coastguards and port authorities worldwide for vessel traffic services, safety, security and search and rescue. These radars are typically slotted waveguides that rotate once every 3 seconds, firing 25 kW microsecond pulses in X-band at a rate of 1 kHz. I will examine the different elements in the signal path from magnetron to target acquisition and tracking, using pictures rather than numbers to attempt to convey a basic understanding of the issues in this field.
