The First Year of ALFALFA (A2010): Who, What, When, Where, How and Why

ALFALFA, the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA Survey, is a two-pass drift scan spectral line survey intended to cover 7000 square degrees of high galactic latitude sky visible from Arecibo, with nearly 8 times the sensitivity and 4 times the angular resolution of HIPASS. Because of its wide areal coverage and spectrophotometric accuracy, ALFALFA will provide a legacy dataset for the astronomical community at large, serving as the basis for numerous studies of the local extragalactic Universe. Begun in February 2005, ALFALFA is now in its second year of scheduling as AO project A2010. In this talk, I will review the progress of ALFALFA observations, data analysis, software tools, data product development and educational activities as well as give a brief overview of some of the most exciting science results to date.
