NAIC has discovered a structural problem that overstressed a beam on
the the triangular platform of the Arecibo telescope, and is halting
operations until the problem can be fixed. A temporary splint is in place,
and the telescope is safe. We are studying the cause of the failure, and
examining strategies for a permanent repair along with our structural
engineering firm. We hope to resume routine use of the telescope by
the middle of March, though there may be some restrictions on observing
modes.
