Periasamy K. Manoharan

Dr P.K. Manoharan joined Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in 1975, immediately after his BSc (Special Physics) at American College, Madurai and since then he was associated with the Ooty Radio Telescope. He completed his doctoral studies in 1991 at TIFR, and then spent one year (1993) as a JSPS Fellow at the Solar–Terrestrial Environment Laboratory, Japan, for a year and half (1995–96) as a Visiting Fellow at the Observatoire de Paris, Meudon, France, and nearly two years (2002–03) as a Visiting Scientist at the Goddard Space Flight Center, NASA and University of Maryland, USA. He was an academic faculty member of TIFR and served as the Professor and Director of Ooty Radio Observatory, Radio Astronomy Centre (2004–2018).

Manoharan was a member (2009–2014) and served as the Vice–President of IAU Commission 49 (Interplanetary Plasma and Heliosphere) (2014–2016). He was the Secretary (2005–2009) and the President (2010–2012) of Asia–Oceania Geosciences Society (aOGS), Solar–Terrestrial Science Section. He served in the Editorial Board of `Geoscience Letters for four years. He currently serves in Editorial Boards ofJournal of Space Weather and Space Climate and Indian Journal of Radio & Space Physics.

Starting from October 2019, Dr. Manoharan is a Senior Observatory Scientist at the Arecibo Observatory. He has initiated heliophysics and space weather studies with the Arecibo Telescope.

Manoharan developed a unique method to determine the speed and other physical properties of the solar wind using interplanetary scintillation (IPS) measurements from a single radio telescope. His studies have led to important results pertaining to solar wind and Space Weather processes/effects in the inner heliosphere. Manoharan explained for the first time the formation of the twisted magnetic loop system (which was later named sigmoid ) at sites of coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Studies by him and his co–researchers have been useful to understand fundamental issues regarding the physics of magnetic reconnection on the sun and associated release of large energy. He has guided a number of students on studies of sun, space weather, pulsar, radio astronomical system development, etc.

Dr. Manoharan performs space weather studies with the Arecibo Telescope. He does research in solar wind acceleration, observations of solar coronal jets, plasma tail turbulence of Comet ATLAS, and in probing the plasma tail of Interstellar Comet 2I/Borisov
