Introduction (top)

The sband console is situated in the sband transmitter room up in the dome. It was tested for rfi on 27,28 jan16:

27jan16:anritsu spectrum analyzer test, visual inspection.

    The cabinet has 2 doors.

Visual inspection:

Some data taken with the anritsu spectrum analyzer

We used the anritsu spectrum analyzer and the large loop antenna to snoop around the cabinet when the doors were closed

160128: sbconsole on/off (before repairs) (top)

On 160128 (in the morning) we took data with the 327 receiver and the mock spectrometers. While taking data we cycled the power on the sband console a few times. We wanted to see which birdies went away when the rack was off.

Mock setup:

Some comments on the rfi:

Comparing cabinet on with cabinet off:

For each band i averaged when the power was all the way on, and when it was all the way off.. i tried to leave out the transition periods.

160128: sbconsole on/off (after cabinet repairs) (top)

Victor and his crew worked on repairing the sband console shielding on 160128. After the repairs, we repeated the sband on/off console tests using the 327 mhz rcvr and the mock spectrometer (see above for setup). The external ups, power supply was still present for these tests.

160203: 4mhz comb coming from ups (top)

On 03feb16  Felix went looking for the 4 mhz comb coming from the sband cabinet.
He used the anritsu spectrum analyzer (3 hz rbw) and the loop antenna.
The strongest component of the comb (328.0205 Mhz) was found to come from a ups that was sitting outside of the cabinet.
When the exciter amplifiers failed, they were replaced with another set. This set was install in the bottom of the rack. I was told that there was no room to put the power supply inside the rack, so it (along with a ups) were placed outside the rack, and then at twisted pair power cable was brought into the rack (with no filter?).
The power supply was  6 volts, 3 amps, linear supply..

Victor and crew will try to place this power supply   in the cabinet tomorrow (04feb16). This will eliminate the need for the ups outside of the cabinet.
We can then recheck  things with the 327 receiver to see what is left.

The plot shows a screen grab (from the anritsu spectrum analyzer) of the 328 Mhz birdie when the antenna was close to the power supply/ups (.jpg)

160204: sband console on/off, external ups removed. (top)

The sband console had a power supply and ups outside of the rfi cabinet. On 04feb16 victor and his crew placed the power supply inside of the rfi cabinet, and connected it to the cabinet power. The external ups was then removed.

We then did a test to check for any rfi coming from the cabinet:
